Ultrasound Assessment of Femoral Anteversion

A method ofmeasuring femoral neck anteversion using a static B scanner has been described (Moulton and Upadhyay 1982). This study used dried femora in a waterbath and the results obtained were confirmed by direct measurement. Although the experimental scans were performed under direct vision it was assumed that the method would be accurate in vivo where similar images can only be obtained using surface landmarks. We have therefore performed in vivo ultrasound assessment and compared it with the CT evaluation of anteversion in 10 subjects. In a separate study the angle of anteversion in the right hip of a single volunteer was calculated using different gantry positions for the ultrasound scanner.
